Journos voice need for new media council

Veteran journalists on Saturday pressed for the need of a new media council to not only monitor the print and electronic media but also the social media which in today's times plays a major role in shaping the views of public

Speaking on the Challenges faced by media on the Annual State Convention of Indian Media Centre (IMC), former Editor-in-Chief of The Tribune Hari Jaisingh said that there is a need of Media Council of India to keep a check on not only the print and electronic media but also the social media. The Annual State convention of IMC's Delhi Chapter witnessed the presence of many veteran journalists Deenanath Mishr, KG Suresh, Shivaji Sarkar, Sanjana Sharma amongst others.

Advocating the need of a new council, Jaisingh who was the Chief Guest on this occasion said, "Social media needs to be brought under the ambit of a new council because there is a need of regulating social networking sites as they have put fresh challenges before the media. Plus, the role played by these websites cannot be undermined." Another prominent member of IMC Shyam Khosla also voiced the same concerns and stressed on the need of a Media Council of India.

Jaisingh also praised the young journalists and said their basics are sound but pointed out the need to provide guidance to them. He said that media should contribute to the development of the nation by enlightening public. He, however, lamented, "The media today is at crossroads but we would like to see it away with this confusion by sticking to the values of journalism." He added that media's role should be informing the public objectively and correctly and commended the journalists of small cities for their grassroots work.

Jaisingh also commented upon the issues highlighted by the media in the recent times and said, "it is good that media is highlighting the issue of corruption but it should also focus on other problems like unemployemt, over-population and crime against women."
